Why measure ship emissions directly?
Most ships report CO2 emissions to IMO DCS and EU MRV using fuel-based Co2 estimates and default emissions factors. This reliance on estimates introduces a margin of error that often results in over-stated emissions, negatively impacting CII ratings and leads to over spending on expensive biofuels.
Direct emissions measurement vs reliance on fuel-based estimates typically reveals an 8-10% reduction in reportable CO2 emissions because it precisely measures the the amount of CO2 actually emitted, which is never more than the default emissions factors in common use.
