Direct Emissions Measurement for Ships

Why measure ship emissions directly?

Most ships report CO2 emissions to IMO DCS and EU MRV using fuel-based Co2 estimates and default emissions factors. This reliance on estimates introduces a margin of error that often results in over-stated emissions, negatively impacting CII ratings and leads to over spending on expensive biofuels.

Direct emissions measurement vs reliance on fuel-based estimates typically reveals an 8-10% reduction in reportable CO2 emissions because it precisely measures the the amount of CO2 actually emitted, which is never more than the default emissions factors in common use.

Accurately measure and report your actual emissions

In addition to CO2, EU ETS will require ships to track NOX and CH4 levels in 2025. In 2026, ship owners will need be required to purchase costly NOX and CH4 emissions allowances. SailPlan has precisely measured NOX and CH4 since 2020 and is the leading direct emissions monitoring and reporting provider for ships and fleets.

Like carbon dioxide factors, default emissions factors for methane and nitrous oxides also overstate your production of these gasses leading you to overpay for EU ETS.

SailPlan can monitor and report actual NOX and CH4, saving you money.

Reduce spend on capital-intensive efficiency improvements

SailPlan provides an immediate improvement to CII, and if you are using some amount of HVO or biofuels as a part of your strategy to achieve a target CII score, SailPlan will help you accurately calculate the HVO and biofuel amounts needed, resulting in better fleet-wide cost management of these expensive fuels.

Before using SailPlan, many of our customers inadvertently reported higher CO2 emissions, leading to less accurate decisions on fuel choices and operational planning. This also affected the daily execution of voyages. By using SailPlan, you will have access to accurate data, enabling informed operational decisions, reduced fuel costs, and a faster, easier way to enhance your CII rating.
